Angry Republican/Loving American

 Without words, total loss
Back to Full Blog

I have been sick lately, as a matter of fact, just broke down and went to the doctor. Between that, and being totally busy, I really havn't had much time to read the news or watch. So the other day, I tuned in to see what is going on. With all the mudslinging going on, I instantly realized what is going on. Mid-term elections.

I'm at a loss for words. It seems that people on both sides of the aisle have nothing better to do with the "hard-earned" money we pay them then to look for dirt on the opposite side. I am really displeased with this.

It makes me sick with both parties. A few years ago, a man named Steve Largent ran for governor here in Oklahoma. There were three men in the race. and the other 2 Did nothing but throw dirt at each other and Largent. The only dirt Largent threw in the entire campaign was to publicly apologize for how dirty the campaign was. He barely lost, but I wish there were a few more decent men like him. I wouldn't care what was behind their name.

Hey, Mr. Furious-- Sorry to hear you're not well. I'm a democrat, liberal in some respects, conservative in others. I agree the mudlsinging has gotten out of hand and really reflects badly on all of us. Unfortunately, it's hard to have a level, honest, in-depth dialogue when if you say you're against the invasion of Iraq, you're told that that means you don't support the troops. If you say you support a woman's right to choose, which the law protects, you're characterized as a baby-killer. If you express concern about the deterioration of America's global competitiveness in the last five years, you're told you're a traitor that wants the UN to run the world and expects the US to submit itself to a global test for any inititative. A newspaper story centers, for example, on the medicare disaster, and what's the response? "Oh, the New York Times, they hate America!" The list goes on and on. So the mudslinging goes on and on. What I find particularly cowardly and decidedly un-Christian is when people and a party are so willing to lie, distort, to call people who don't agree with them "America-Haters, flag-burners, baby-killers, terrorist-supporters", etc., but then when they get a taste of their own medicine they bemoan the "bile, and hate-speech and mudslinging." Let's you and I set a standard--let's have a dialogue. Tell me why you're a conservative. Do so in polite terms with details and reasoning, and I promise you I will respond respectfully and politely with my views. How's that? Fair enough?

By the way, while I will not vote republican in the '06 elections, I would be eternally grateful if someone can tell me how to get my paragraph breaks into the text when you're posting a ocmment in response at someone else's blog. I promise you I had them in my previous response--I don;t know why it appears as one long muddled paragraph. Thanks!

Interesting. Of course, you can't forget the news media role in all of this.

Hi, John--

I, too, worry about the direction in which we are headed. Mainly because I feel we are allowing ourselves to be steered in a very dangerous direction because we are so fearful and ignorant. America's greatness and strength has always been derived from its energy, ingenuity and cleverness.

But we have become soooooooo willing to hear the silliest stuff you can possibly imagine, and not only believe it but base our votes (!) on it.

For example--you bemoan in your post the fact that "some say we should embrace our enemies."

Now, I know Bush and the filth that report to him had lots of people believing that, but, honestly--honestly, John, can you give me an example of someone in the political world who's advocated embracing our enemies or even anything remotely like that? Just one example?

I'm not looking to pick a fight--I really am not. But it pisses me off that we have allowed our country to sink so low and it frustrates me to think that there are people out there who are willing to believe anything, say anything, distort anything, because they basically are angry that Clinton got a blow job.

No one on my side wants to embrace our enemies. We want to fight a war on terror--not pretend to do so as the curent administration has done--lots and lots of tough talk, all mitigated by blatant incompetence and immoral cronyism.

We should think about what we say and believe more deeply. Unfortunately, today's republicans are far too willing to put their politics ahead of their country, and America is now a second-tier nation rapidly declining into the thrid-tier because of that. I hope all these angry republicans are proud.

Regards,

Seth
