Lately, I really have been doing some thinking. I've been listlening to alot of what is going on in this country, and quite frankly, I wonder where we are going. Just where are we going in this world? Every one seems to have an opinion on this subject.
Some say we are heading in the wrong direction, that we need to embrace our enemies. That we should look out for our liberties, which they say are more important than our security. Yes, our security is very important. But so are our freedom. one really needs to stop and look at the whole issue, not just part of it.
People seem to lump this into one complete issue. But, you really have to take it one piece at a time. For instance. I completely agree with the wiretapping. I believe that it does serve a purpose. I believe that it doesn't enfringe on my rights and freedoms. How can it? You can't tell me that you have the right to commit terrorist activities. That is what the wiretapping is meant to do.
On the other hand, You have the national ID. No thankyou you. That does enfringe on many of our rights. Including the rights of the states to govern themselves. No I don't like it, and am upset that the president actually signed this into affect.
Life is not all black and white, republican and democrat, liberal or conservative. Live a little and realize that it isn't a bad thing to go against the grain.

I can see it coming. He's a little rich boy who never spend a day deprived of anything at all and he don't care about poor people. I don't see how anyone can stand by him.
I tried once, but my comment got deleted (good Bushie tactic) so I'll ask the writer of this drivel one more time: can you give one example--just ONE--of someone of any consequence or integrity who has said we need to embrace our enemies or anything even remotely like that?
Waiting with reckless abandon for your response.
Man!! I'm really disappointed there are so many right-wing lunatics out there who are fine with the idea of putting their politics ahead of their country.
I too, love the Lord Jesus Christ.
1) not all wire-tapping requires a warrant today. There are in fact situations that don't require a warrant and Bush's justification is that his program fits into that area (I'm not saying it does, I'm just saying it is wrong to say that all wire-tapping requires a warrant).
2) The president does have some general powers that are not to be infringed upon by the congress. In fact, it is entirely possible that a law passed by congress cannot be imposed on the president because it otherwise would infringe upon those powers. That does not mean the president has TOTAL power, it means that those that are constitutionally granted cannot be abridged - and that has not changed for 200 years and Bush is no where near the top of the list of presidents who wield their power.
3) The 72 hours is a canard. 72 hours does not mean, wire-tap now and then just go ask the judge and he shall approve. It means that you have 72 hours to get over a fairly large hurdle to obtain a warrant. I'm not saying that Bush shouldn't try, I'm just saying it's not as easy as saying - "he could have just gotten one."
Kevmatt:
1) I think the whole point is not to criminally prosecute a terrorist by eavedropping on them, rather it is to stop them from boarding the plane because we know their plan. Prosecuting a war is entirely different than trying to criminally prosecute a bad guy.
2) you suggest that no one is above the law and I agree, but that is based on the premise that the program is illegal and that premise is plain wrong. While it may one day be found illegal, there is plenty of case law related to the 4th amendment and the constitution which grants the executive branch certain powers that make this quite possibly legal. If it was as simple as following existing laws and those laws fully support what it is the president is doing to protect this country, then I'm guessing he would have. They are not using FISA, the only potentially applicable law to this specific situation because they feel it would hamstring their efforts. Again, it doesn't mean it won't be found to be illegal, but given all the we know about the program now why does the program continue to not use FISA and yet no one seems to want to stop the program?
River Rat:
That's funny that people on the left think of Bush as some rich, priviledged guy who doesn't care about poor people. What do you think Kerry, Clinton, Kennedy (pick one), Edwards, Gore, etc. are - people who grew up in the middle class and care about poor people? Not one presidential hopeful with a realistic shot - other than maybe Condoleeza Rice - knows jack shit about what it's like to live a middle-class life working 9 to 5 and/or two jobs to make ends meet.
and finally Seth:
you are right that there are a lot of right-wing loons out there, but if you think that everyone on the looney left is making sense then there is no hope for you. You are also right that it would likely be impossible to find a quote of anyone that mattered that said those specific words, but the point is that many - some even on the right - that feel that the problem is that we just don't understand where they are coming from and that we could "get along" with "them" if only we could empathize with their positions. For instance, the silly cartoons. We should know that one shouldn't create an image of Mohamed and then they wouldn't protest. And so the western media, having this enlightened sensitivity decides that they shouldn't print them because there is no point in inflaming them. See, we're getting along so well. Until of course, the islamists don't want our wives to wear bikinis on the beach because it offends them and so in the name of multi-culturalism we agree that it is not right to wear bikinis. Frankly, the U.S. has a culture and if you come here I would expect you to learn and embrace our culture which may include continuing your own traditions and culture just so long as you don't tell me that I can't continue with mine. And thus, I submit to those on the left that I don't give a rats' butt what the enemy's point of view is - they need to understand ours or stop attacking it.
God of the Bible, which I assume is the Bible you believe in, is not "republican or democrat, liberal or conservative". God is a God of the poor, the widow, the fatherless, the orphan. Jesus spent more time with sinners, prostitutes, tax collectors, and other untouchables than with the 'shiney' people. I think that I am most like Jesus when I do the same.
